My Dad’s Scout Years

(See also Curry Boy Scout Family Tree)

Researching my father’s Scouting history from a century ago reveals a fascinating picture of his time in both Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Because records from the 1920s are often fragmented, these artifacts serve as vital historical evidence. I only have part of the story, though, as my older brother has some of dad’s artifacts like his Eagle Scout medal and badge. Unfortunately what my brother has is in a trunk in his attic that is rather inaccessible at this time, so there is more that someday may be added to these collections.

My father was born in 1906, one of his brothers was born in 1908. They were both Eagle Scouts, both were in Essington Troop #1, both went to Penn State and were fraternity brothers in the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity.

My brother was born in 1939, I was born in 1942. We both are Eagle Scouts, both were in Aronimink Troop #2, both went to Penn State and are fraternity brothers in the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Scouting obviously played an important role in both generations and had a significant impact on our lives. We share this history1 and our collective artifacts toward future generations of Scouts and for the good of Scouting.

33. My Dad’s Badges and Records (Samuel B. Curry)

The “Two-Council” Story

It is rare to find a single-owner collection that so cleanly documents a Scout’s move across the country in the 1920s. These artifacts bridge the gap between two of Scouting’s most historic regions:

  • The Midwest: The pioneering spirit of Indian Mound Reservation in Wisconsin.
  • The East Coast: The foundational traditions of Camp Delmont in Pennsylvania.

To hold these items is to touch the very beginning of the Scouting movement in America, when a Scout’s uniform was a unique assembly of local pride and national belonging.
